Welcome to the bizarre, quirky, amazing world of SEO (Search Engine Optimization). There is only one major search engine used in the UK, namely Google.co.uk. Google in year 2011 has over 90% market-share of 'search' here and looks like it won't be overly challenged in that domination for a few years, perhaps for a decade.

Being in the search engines is a strange thing. You might think that your website being in position 11 instead of position 9 for a keyword search is not too much difference. Very wrong. Position eleven is on page two and position nine is on page one. From my own observed stats, position 9 would generate more than three times the traffic (users) than position 11. And even on the same page (of page one on google), approximately doubling per every two positions climbed (so that position 7 would generate circa twice the traffic as position 9).

I used to be a tad skeptical about whether search engines were really of great benefit for a business.....that was before I really looked at the ROI (return on investment) for this method. I used to reckon upon it costing around one pound in using traditional advertising media to bring a new person to a website, i.e. a newspaper advert costing £500 could generate 500 extra user-sessions for the website. However, I have found that spending £500 on SEO will generate at least ten times the number of people coming to the site.....albeit over a longer time frame of a year. Ten times the bang-per-buck is a phenomenal rate of return.
